Wise Up, Mr. Shropsharp! (known as Wise Up, Mr. Lockerman in the online book) is a short story written by Greg for kids around Manny's age. It is about a man named Mr. Shropsharp who thinks polar bears are useless animals who changes his opinion at the end of the story.
History[]
The Last Straw[]
Greg wrote this story in order prove to Susan that the books that she reads to Manny are easy to write. He says all he needed to do was to make the main character learn his lesson at the end and making it rhyme.
In the story, Mr. Shropsharp believes that polar bears are useless animals until one day he crashes his car and falls off a bridge. It is revealed a polar bear named Tobuk saves him, and Mr. Shropsharp learns new respects for polar bears.
Greg didn't made it rhyme and will only do it if his publisher pays him extra.[1]
Online[]
Greg's reasons in writing this story was done out of wanting to see if he could write better than the sitcoms that were making thousands of dollars. He based the story off an idea of every new show that is about some ignorant dad who changes his attitude at the end of the show. Like in The Last Straw, the story is pretty much unchanged except Mr. Lockerman picks on Eskimos instead.
Greg shows it to Ann who doesn't approve of his humor but was happy that her son was writing a script and lets him use her camera. [2]
