Whilst we are rooted to our spots, she doth move on ligher feet...
Mrs. Norton whispering lyrics from We Three Trees to Greg and the other trees in the Wizard of Oz play

Mrs. Norton is the music teacher at Larry Mack Junior Middle School, and the play director of The Wizard of Oz play during the events of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. She reappears in Hard Luck.

History[]

Diary of a Wimpy Kid[]

During Wizard of Oz auditions, she made the kids sing My Country 'Tis of Thee to assign them roles accordingly to their vocal ranges. She singled out Greg Heffley despite his attempts at getting rejected from the play.[1] [2]

The next day, she shows everyone the Wizard of Oz play which influenced Greg's decision of becoming a tree.[3]

Rehearsals weren't going well due to many changes and issues, one of which is Mrs. Norton assistance in whispering an actor's line if they forget, making memorizing dialogue pointless. She added new scenes and characters including getting a first grader to play Toto and make him walk on four legs. This lead his mother to come in and demand Mrs. Norton to allow her son to walk on two legs. But most damaging to Greg was her decision to make everyone sing a song including the trees who are going to sing We Three Trees during the play. The only beneficial move was allowing the trees to carve out arm holes after Archie Kelly tripped over Rodney James though this would later prove to be disastrous.[4] [5] Before the play, she tries to get Rodney James over his stage freight but fails to do.

Predictably, nobody remembered their lines but Mrs. Norton kept it moving with her piano. As it was time for the trees to sing, Greg decided to stay silent to avoid embarrassment from Rodrick Heffley, which caused the other trees to do the same. Mrs. Norton thought the trees must've forgotten the lyrics so she came over to the side of the stage and whispered the remaining lines. But then Greg sees Patty Farrell on the other side of the stage and took the opportunity to get revenge by throwing an apple at her. This leads to chaos between Patty and the trees, forcing Mrs. Norton to shut down the play.[6][7]

Hard Luck[]

She reappears in Hard Luck, where Greg mentions that none of the boys in her class are willing to participate. When he finds out that he is failing, Greg tries to be her best student in order to improve his grade and sings the entirety of the song the class is working on after being called, even though Mrs. Norton was just taking attendance.[8]

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2021 film)[]

She is also mentioned in Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2021 film) when Rowley talks about The Wizard of Oz.

Online[]

In the online book, Mrs. Norton reprises her role from the first book. The play ended after Mrs. Norton finished her part as there were no breakouts that occurred.[9]
