Mr. Hardy was the long-term substitute teacher for Rowley Jefferson and Greg Heffley's science class in Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid. He appears when Rowley talks about old stories involving him and Greg.
Initially, Rowley though he would be exactly like his old teacher Mrs. Modi. However, all what he did was write what to do and read the news. During one of the tests, he gave everyone the same score (because he didn't even look at the tests), even Rowley, who was the only one who actually did it. Greg stood up to Mr. Hardy and told him that Rowley deserved a higher score, causing Mr. Hardy to change Rowley's test results,
