Matilda was the the imaginary beagle in Frank and Rodrick Heffley's horror story in The Deep End. Matilda was a crusty old ranger's dog but when one day when he lit a bonfire he saw a strange creature and Matilda went out to chase the creature but when he went after her all he saw was a broken collar and every day after that with a half moon he heard Matilda howl.
