Isla de Corales (Coral Island in Spanish) is a fictional, luxury island resort that the Heffleys visited in The Getaway.

Description[]

Isla de Corales could probably be located somewhere in Mexico, the Caribbean, Central/South America, or the Canary Islands where Spanish is spoken, but English is often used too. This is likely because items in the resort's shop are mainly in Spanish, as well as signs on the mild/wild sidewall, the resort website's text is in Spanish, while all other text within the resort is written in English.

The resort is split into 2 sides: the Wild Side, and the Mild Side. The Wild Side is for adults only, while the Mild Side is for families. It is likely that adults with no children can stay on either side. Each side has a golf club, and a free-form pool. The Mild Side features a toddler cabana, a kid play zone, a Teen Zone, Tween Zone, while the Wild Side features a private beach where adults can sunbathe naked.

The side division's a relatively new thing, because the resort wasn't like that when Greg Heffley's parents, Frank and Susan, had honeymooned there after they got married.

History[]

The Getaway[]

The resort is the primary setting for the book. Susan and Frank Heffley went to this resort on their last honeymoon. The Heffley family went to this resort after Susan and Frank saw an ad for the place on TV and wanted to take their kids to the place of their last honeymoon for Christmas, following problems at home. However, their vacation practically snowballed with the calamity ensuing because of some of their actions. An image of the Heffley family is posted on the homepage of Isla de Corales' website after all of the trouble they caused while they were there, and they are later banned from the resort permanently.

Trivia[]

  • The medicine product that Greg got for Frank on page 97 is "!Ay! mi estomago!" but translates to "Oh, My Stomach!",
  • At the end of the book, Greg pulls open a board from the wall that separates the Mild Side and the Wild Side.
  • The kid from page 89 who was participating in the treasure dive appeared again on page 142 in the arcade playing Crumb Muncher.
  • On page 217, it says "Atención Póngase en Contacto con Isla de Corales si conoce la identidad de las personas en la foto de Arriba." The English translation for the picture is "Attention! Contact Coral Island if you know the identity of the people in the picture above."]
  • It is unknown what happened to the resort after the events of The Getaway.
  • The place has microbes in the water, which is very unsanitary and is what caused Frank Heffley’s diarrhea.
