The Safety Patrol is a service ran by Larry Mack Junior Middle School. Its purpose, as seen in the movie, is to act as the "police" of the middle school. In the Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2010 film, Greg Heffley refers to it as "the cops of middle school." The Safety Patrol members have to perform tasks such as walking pre-schoolers to their preschools and enforcing the laws of the school. Safety Patrol members have a lot of privileges such as free hot chocolate before homeroom/1st-period and protection against harassers. As of The Meltdown, the service is entirely made up of girls.

History[]

Diary of a Wimpy Kid[]

Greg and Rowley Jefferson join the Safety Patrol because of the benefits. Their job was to walk some kindergarteners back home in which one of the kindergartners tried to inform Greg that he had an accident in his pants.[1]

One day, Greg terrorizes the children with earth-worms and was spotted by Mrs. Irvine. But she mistaken the culprit for Rowley as Greg was borrowing Rowley's coat and complained to Mr. Winsky.

Rowley was suspended from the Safety Patrol indefinitely and was forced to apologize to the kindergartners as a result. Greg, after being forced by his mother, and tells him the truth but pins some of the blame on Rowley. Later, Mr. Winsky finds out the truth from an "anonymous source" (who was most likely Rowley) and suspends Greg indefinitely while also reinstating and promoting Rowley to Team Captain. Greg thoughts about revenge on Rowley but realizes that he will be able take a partner for the Safety Patrol trip to Six Flags. Rowley quits some time after the book.

The Meltdown[]

During the events of The Meltdown, the Safety Patrol became all-girls, as all the male members (including Rowley) had either quit or got kicked out. Greg claims that the girls take the Safety Patrols much more seriously than any of the guys did and are major sticklers for the rules. It's unknown if Mr. Winsky is still the advisor of the program, because he isn't seen or mentioned again after the first book.

Also in the Meltdown, Greg mentions that the final two male members of the Safety Patrols (Eric Reynolds and Dougie Finch, both of whom were captains) received the boot after they got into a snowball fight outside of one of the Kindergarten-classrooms at the elementary school. Greg also said that he tried to get reinstated in the Safety Patrol, but was rejected, so he left.

In the snowball battle, after the Lower Surrey Street Kids destroyed Upper Surrey Street Kids' fort, the Upper Surrey Street Kids were out of ammo but they do think they have hope when they saw a Safety Patrol-girls marching towards the Surrey Street Kids. Instead of helping them, they were out for revenge. However, later they joined forces with the Upper and Lower Surrey Street Kids, and Whirley Street Kids to battle the Mingos as they hate the Mingos even more than each other.

During The Meltdown, The Safety Patrol is biased towards those that are Female, as males cannot walk on the street where there is no snow, and Greg is forced to come up with ways to prevent cold snow from seeping into his shoes. Later on in The Meltdown, they can be seen allowing other girls on Surrey Street to walk on the snow-less road, while Greg, Rowley, and two other unidentified boys have to walk on the snow-covered sidewalk. With the Apparent reasoning for this being that most of the boys were mean and savage to the girls prior to joining the Safety Patrols.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010 film)[]

Greg and Rowley Jefferson join the Safety Patrol because of the aforementioned advantages. Greg, however, abuses his right to be in the Safety Patrol by making the Pre-Schoolers that he was walking to their daycare jump into a large hole. This was because Greg thought that the teenagers from Halloween were about to drive past, so he was trying to hide from them. This plan backfired, however, as not only did he mistake a man in a pickup for the teenagers, he was also spotted by Mrs. Irvine, who mistook him for Rowley, only because he was wearing Rowley's jacket. (Rowley was absent because he couldn't get his cast wet.) This resulted in Rowley being suspended from Safety Patrol indefinitely and being forced to apologize to the pre-schoolers. Greg tells Rowley he was the one who terrorized the preschoolers as Rowley then breaks up with Greg as being friends. A while later, Mr. Winsky finds out the truth about what had happened from one of the pre-schoolers, and Greg was kicked out immediately Rowley was then reinstated and promoted to Team Captain for showing "dignity under false suspicion".

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2021 film)[]

Aside from posters for the program being shown throughout the school during the film, the Safety Patrols don't have any role in the movie.
