Charlotte's Web is a real-life novel by American author E. B. White and illustrated by Garth Williams that was published in 1952. The novel tells the story of a livestock pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte. It is shown in Dog Days and again in The Getaway.

History[]

Dog Days[]

Susan Heffley chooses this book for Greg Heffley to read as his assignment in the Reading Is Fun Club after she was unsatisfied with the book Greg chose. Greg predicts either the girl or the pig doesn't make it to the end of the book, with his prediction being unbeknownst to him wrong as it is actually Charlotte that doesn't make it to the end of the book. The next day Susan made Greg read the book for twenty minutes, however Greg quickly got distracted which led to Susan banning Greg from watching TV until he reads the book.[1]

When Susan finds out Greg haven't read the first three chapters of Charlotte's Web on his deadline date, she made Greg sit down at the kitchen table until he was finished. This lasted for thirty minutes until Robert Jefferson knocked on the Heffleys' door.[2]

The Getaway[]

During The Getaway, Greg discusses his fear of spiders and says that if he was a character in Charlotte's Web, it would have been a very short book, as he would've killed Charlotte.[3] This implies that Greg did eventually find out that it was Charlotte who didn't make it to the end of the book as well as the whole plot synopsis at some point.
