Aunt Gretchen is the aunt of Greg Heffley and the youngest sister of Susan Heffley. She appears during the events of Hard Luck, Hot Mess and Partypooper.
She is the mother of two twin boys, Malvin and Malcolm, who are extremely unmanageable to the point that she has to keep them on leashes. She owns a lot of pets, and while having to take care of them, Greg Heffley describes it as like a zoo.

She first appears when Greg lists his aunts. She can be seen as the first aunt on the list. When Greg starts talking about Aunt Gretchen, he describes her as being the opposite of her oldest sister, Aunt Cakey, as she has two boys and a bunch of pets. One time, she took off for a few days to go sightseeing, but during her time away one of her rabbits gave birth to a litter of bunnies. Frank was apparently mad at the situation since Gretchen mistakenly thought her rabbit was male. She appears again being part of the adults searching for the lost ring of Meemaw. She is last mentioned when her sons went to her mother's house after being kicked out by Frank after one of her sons called the police on them because they ran out of ketchup.
Hot Mess[]
Last Christmas, Aunt Gretchen tried stealing a portion of Gramma's meatballs to uncover the secret recipe, However, she got caught by Sweetie. Once Greg and his family arrive at their old beach house for the vacation, Aunt Gretchen and her two boys have already occupied the room in which they had reserved for themselves. Greg discusses the differences of Susan and Aunt Gretchen's parenting and how Aunt Gretchen complains about Susan being overprotective when she doesn't even bother taking care of hers. Greg is annoyed how Aunt Gretchen encourages her sons to pee in the water, noticing that they also might be doing something else in there. Later, everyone gets in each other's way while cooking spaghetti and Aunt Gretchen argued about the idea of pouring boiling water on the floor to exterminate the germs.

Aunt Gretchen made a cameo during a family livestream however like the rest of the family on the livestream she started to get uncomfortable when Aunt Loretta and Aunt Dorothy turned the chat into an argument between each other.

- She is the only one of Greg’s aunts who is confirmed or implied to be married, and the only one who is confirmed to have kids. She appears to be raising her sons as a single mother, as we never see or hear anything about Malvin and Malcom's father (presumably Gretchen's husband).
- Aunt Gretchen is an enabler, allowing her sons to do whatever they want without any consequences.
- She also criticizes Susan for trying to protect Greg, showing that she doesn't like punishing her children.
- Many fans consider her and her children to be the worst members of the Heffley family and Gramma's daughters, the reason is that she does nothing in the nineteenth book and never controls her childrens, doing whatever they want.
